Amazon redesigned its whole Kindle family on 1 October 2026: a new 6-inch Kindle, a new Kindle Paperwhite, a new Kindle Colorsoft, Signature Editions of each, and new Kids versions. If you’re shopping for an e-reader for yourself or as a gift this season, here’s how the line-up breaks down and which one makes sense for whom.

Quick answer: most readers should get the Kindle Paperwhite: waterproof, warm light, up to 12 weeks of battery. Pick the basic Kindle if you want the smallest, cheapest option and mostly read at home. Only pay for a Signature Edition if its extras (auto-adjusting light, 32GB, dock charging) genuinely fit how you read. Choose Colorsoft only if you read comics, graphic novels, cookbooks or magazines.

What’s new in the 2026 Kindles

Every new model has a flush-front display: the screen and the frame sit on the same level, with no raised border. They’re thinner and lighter than before, and come in new colors, including Ube (purple), Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green, Graphite and Fig. Amazon also launched accessories built around easier page-turning, including Kindle Click, a small Bluetooth page-turn remote that also works with Kindles from 2024 onwards.

Which Kindle should you buy?

Kindle Paperwhite: the best choice for most people

The Paperwhite is the sweet spot. Waterproofing means you can read in the bath or by the pool without worrying, the warm light is easier on the eyes at night, and up to 12 weeks of battery means you’ll rarely think about charging. Amazon says the new model has the largest Paperwhite screen yet and its highest contrast, so text looks crisp in bright sun and in bed. Note: the new Paperwhite launched for preorder, so check the delivery date if you’re buying it as a gift.

Kindle: best for budgets and pockets

The new 6-inch Kindle is the most pocket-sized Kindle Amazon has made. It doesn’t have the Paperwhite’s waterproofing or warm light, but for reading on a commute or at home it does the job well, and books open noticeably faster than on the last model. A good first e-reader, and a great gift for teens or occasional readers.

Signature Editions: nice, not necessary

The Signature Editions add convenience rather than a better screen: an aluminum back, double the storage (32GB), a light that adjusts itself to the room, double-tap to turn pages, and charging on a dock. 16GB already holds thousands of ebooks, so the extra storage mainly matters if you keep lots of audiobooks or comics on the device. Buy one if you read daily and will use the auto-light and dock; otherwise the standard Paperwhite is the better value.

Kindle Colorsoft: only if you read in color

Colorsoft’s paper-like color display is made for comics, graphic novels, cookbooks, travel guides and magazines. For novels and non-fiction it adds cost without adding much, so most readers are better off with a Paperwhite.

Should you buy a 2024 Kindle instead?

Possibly, if you’re after the best price. The previous-generation Kindles are still excellent e-readers; the 2026 changes are mostly about design (flush screens, thinner bodies, new colors) and speed. When a new generation arrives, older models often show up in sale events while stock lasts. If the new look doesn’t matter to you, compare the older model’s price during Prime Big Deal Days (October 6–7) before deciding.

Tips before you buy

  • Check which generation you’re buying. Product titles can look almost identical; the 2026 models mention the new design and colors.
  • Gifts: check delivery dates. Some new models are on preorder and ship on a rolling basis.
  • Ads or no ads. Some Kindle listings show lock-screen ads unless you choose the ad-free version. Check the option before you buy.
  • Kindle Unlimited is separate. It’s a subscription for ebooks and audiobooks, not included with the device.
